Plastering

Interior and exterior plastering, from ceiling repairs to full re-skims.

Plastering
Typically 1 – 3 days

Overview

A roof leak rarely stops at the roof. By the time water has tracked far enough to show as a stain on a bedroom ceiling, the plaster above it is usually already blown, cracked or soft to the touch — and that's a separate trade from the roofing work that caused it, which normally means a second contractor, a second quote, and a second gap in your diary waiting for someone to turn up.

We carry out plastering ourselves, for both interior and exterior surfaces, specifically so that a leak repair and the ceiling damage it left behind can be sorted by one team in one visit rather than being passed between tradespeople. That covers full re-skims, patch repairs to a specific damaged area, and rendering or exterior finishes where render has blown or cracked.

Whether it's a full ceiling that needs stripping back and re-skimming after months of water ingress, or a small patch repair around a repaired soil pipe or extractor fan, we finish it to a smooth, ready-to-decorate standard.

Worth checking

Signs it might be time

A few things that often mean it's worth thinking about plastering — before a small issue becomes a much bigger one.

A ceiling stain that's left the plaster underneath cracked or soft

Bulging or sagging plaster following a roof or plumbing leak

Blown or cracked render on an outside wall

An old textured (Artex-style) ceiling you'd like skimmed smooth

Hairline cracks appearing around doorframes or ceiling joints

Patchy, uneven walls left over from a previous repair

How it works

What happens, step by step

No mystery about what happens next, who's coming, or what it costs before anyone starts work.

  1. 01

    Assess the damage

We look at the affected area (and, where it's leak-related, confirm the roofing repair is already sorted) to scope exactly what plastering work is needed.

  2. 02

    Quote

A clear price for the area involved — a small patch repair is priced very differently to a full room re-skim.

  3. 03

    Protect the room

Furniture, flooring and fixtures are covered and protected before any old plaster comes down.

  4. 04

    Strip damaged plaster

Cracked, blown or water-damaged plaster is removed back to a sound surface — skimming over a failing base never lasts.

  5. 05

    Skim or re-render

New plaster or render is applied and finished smooth, matching in with the surrounding surface where it's a patch repair.

  6. 06

    Drying & final check

We talk you through drying times before decorating and do a final check once it's cured to confirm the finish is right.

Questions

Plastering — frequently asked questions

The questions we're asked most about this specific service. Anything else, just call us.

How long before I can paint over new plaster?

As a general rule, allow about a week per coat of plaster to dry fully in normal conditions, though this varies with room temperature and ventilation. We'll give you a realistic timeframe for your specific job before we leave.

Can you match the texture of my existing ceiling?

For patch repairs, yes — we'll match the surrounding finish, whether that's smooth or a lighter texture. For full Artex removal, the ceiling is skimmed completely smooth.

If your roofing work caused the damage, is the plastering included?

Get in touch and we'll talk through it directly — where our own roofing work has led to internal damage, we deal with that fairly rather than treating it as an unrelated job.

Do you also paint or decorate after plastering?

Our focus is the plastering itself, finished to a smooth, ready-to-decorate standard. Let us know if you need a recommendation for decorating and we're happy to point you in the right direction.
